WTA Tech Conference 2020

Some of you will remember AT&T’s “Reach out and touch someone” campaign from the 1960s and 1970s. The meaning behind it was clear: Technology, in their case, telephony, can help us stay connected to one another, even over great distances.

Today, that’s still true, perhaps even more so—look how communication and collaboration applications have taken over our lives during the COVID pandemic. But it goes far beyond that: digital technologies have become so pervasive, so inextricably intertwined in our lives, that we sometimes feel as if we can’t function, as humans, without them.

Let’s be clear: digital technologies are important, and we need them. But let’s also remember that these tools were created to enhance our humanity, not the other way around. In this presentation, Dr. Steven Shepard will offer a provocative view of our relationship with technology and how we can get the most from it—without losing that most important thing of all: that which makes us human.

Steven Shepard is a writer, speaker, photographer, and audio producer who spends most of his professional time at the intersection of technology and people. He is the author of nearly 100 books and hundreds of articles. He has two kids and three grandkids, and lives in Vermont with his wife, Sabine, who has put up with him for more than 40 years.​

Amanda is the CEO of Newance, a consultancy bringing creative solutions to talent challenges across the US. Having worked with a wide range of companies, from startups to multibillion-dollar enterprises, Amanda has spent the last decade building teams and systems with a human-centered and practical approach. Amanda believes strongly in continuous improvement and its applications across the talent lifecycle. ​Robbie Printz is an award winning comedian who is about to enter his 30th year as a professional stand-up comedian. His latest award was being named Entertainer Of The Year 2016, for Princess Cruise Lines. Over the years he has performed on NBC, A&E, MTV and Comedy Central. Other notable achievements include winning the Boston Comedy Festival, being named ‘Best Comedian in Boston’ by the Improper Bostonian and voted Best Comic In New Hampshire at the NH Comedy Awards. Robbie’s show is a funny take on everyday life. Delivered with high energy and a fast pace that keeps the audience laughing from start to finish.
